Bercy Chen Studio LP is an interesting mix reflected in their works also. Thomas Bercy, comes from Belgium and Calvin Chen comes from Taiwan (by way of Australia).

Being one of the most promising design firms in the world, they had to confirm with stunning, new design. E 11th Street Multi-Use development is only one of the examples that point into a revolutionary direction.

The three story building has a specific destination for every floor. The ground floor is occupied by a boutique retail outlet and an art gallery, the second floor is the office floor and the top floor is residential only.

The floors are disposed in a very interesting formation, mimicking the geological exfoliation of the Texan landscape. But there’s a great side to this design: the terraces and canopies have great (different) views on the surroundings.

It’s a very interesting building, with a disparate geometry but a very coordinated general look signed by Bercy Chen Studio.

Make your space revolve around a sentence! That’s what Atelier Paralelo did for Mario Lucio Business Real Estate Office.

“I´m 60 years old and I won´t be using demodé clothes, behaving as an old man.”

Freely translated into architecture meant a practical and comfortable space with rational and intuitive use with a new social and private bathroom, meeting room with a table for at least 6 where a multimedia projector can be installed and so much more.

The Carrere marble reception with its two panels : a parquet one with the same pattern as the reunion table, a second panel made of 2cm diameter chromed steel tubes; a game of transparencies in the corridor causing a mix of light, reflections and shadows.

The beautiful fragmented poster is really catchy, the vertical strips visually remind the tubes panel and talks about the need of renovation and de/construction of an image, of an idea thought the displayed black and white images of Brazil.

The office space was renovated in 2008, following a project made in 2007 by Thiago de Andrade, Virginia Manfrinato and Stepan Krawctschuk from Atelier Paralelo (you can see more by Atelier Paralelo here, photography by Joana França)

I’m always intrigued and fascinated by clever design. Ergonomic thinking is so challenging and wonderful!

Finnish designer Samuli Naamanka found a way to reduce comfort with an important ergonomic factor, giving us the Clash Series. Clash stools, clash table, clash bench. I chose to feature the Clash Bench because it’s more interesting than a simple stool and clearly more complex than a table.

Linear and elegant, the Clash Bench is effective and simple, everything you could ever ask from a bench. The seats are form-pressed different kinds of wood and the base is matt-/chromed. (you can read more about the designer Samuli Naamanka and see more of his work on his website, here)

If skyscrapers are mainly the new city landscape, we might as well have gardens atop, it just makes it more spectacular.

This Museum Tower Roof Terrace from New York was designed by Architect Francois de Menil. The metal panels of the perforated pavilion allow an interesting view on the surroundings. There’s also a Forrest Myers sculpture at the east end of the terrace, thus mixing steel and nature, right under the clouds.

What could make a skyscraper unique and innovative? A bold architecture inspired by nature.

The Aqua Tower by Studio Gang Architects is currently under construction but the project looks amazing. The building promises a sculptural shape reminding the geologic shapes from the great lakes region. The bold architecture for this hotel and residential with retail and commercial spaces building was awarded with the American Architecture Award and by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture & Design. It will measure 823 feet high and it’s scheduled for completion for the Summer of 2009.

When the world seeks more and more into bio and natural inspired products, Christien Meindertsma’s creations are more than welcomed.

Young Dutch Designer Christien Meindertsma plays with shapes and sheep for her Flocks project. Some of her creations (besides garments) are quite impressive – handmade poufs and rugs, handknitted with giant knitting needles). The rugs are made from the wool of 18 merino sheep, each pouf from a sheep’s wool (each product has a certificate attached to it where you can find information about the sheep from which the product was made). Even if at first, the poufs weren’t colored, now she added some plants ingredients to add color to the lovely poofs. I like my floors carpet-less, but Christien’s work is truly amazing and her rugs and poufs add incredible intimacy and warmth to a room.

Even if it’s a range of upholstered seating designed for restaurants and bars, Schema carver by Geoff Machen look attractive enough to make its ways into a modern dining too.

Schema chairs are available in oak, ash or beech stained to client’s specification. There’s also the choice between fabric or leather. The chair’s proportions are traditional but its low profile is rather original especially with the tapered seat cushions, cutting out in the linear profile of the Schema chair.
I guess this building changes the way I understand the “living space” concept. Harmonia 57 is Triptyque’s office building located in west Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The eco system which allows the vegetation to grow on the walls of the building is heavily sustained by a watering structure running through the concrete walls. The plants grow in little cavities specially designed for this purpose. In time, all the concrete should be covered in vegetation.

The Harmonia 57 is in many ways a living organism. Not only its walls would be covered in vegetation, but also its pipes running trough the walls are like human veins. The water cycle keeping the vegetation alive and growing captures and reuses the rain water. The collected water is transported through a system of pipes that’s pumped up in the walls. By the time the plants will grow to cover the entire walls surface, it won’t be as impressive (and as strange looking) as it is now, at its beginning.
